How To Identify A Cockroach

There are two sides to identifying a cockroach infestation, knowing what cockroaches look like, and knowing how to identify the signs of cockroaches. In Oahu, there are a few different kinds of cockroaches you should know how to identify. Four species that inhabit Oahu are German cockroaches, American cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, and brown-banded cockroaches. Identify a German cockroach by its ½ to ⅝” long, light brown to tan body, and the two short parallel lines located behind its head. Identify an American cockroach by its 1 ¼ to 2 ⅛” long, reddish-brown body, and the yellow figure-eight pattern behind its head. Identify an Oriental cockroach by its 1” long black body and lack of markings. Finally, identify a brown-banded cockroach by its ½” long brown body and the pronounced light-colored banding across its wings. As for the signs of cockroaches, some things to look for around your home include grease marks, coffee-like fecal droppings, egg casings, shed skins, and dead roaches.

The Health Risks Of A Cockroach Infestation In Your Home

Cockroaches are dangerous insects that cause many health problems for people. To start, these pests regularly pick up and transmit harmful disease-causing organisms. The German cockroach alone is capable of spreading 33 different kinds of bacteria, 7 human pathogens, and 6 parasitic worms. When roaches invade area homes, they can spread these sickness vectors over countertops, kitchen tables, and left-out food. If these pests find a way to get into your pantry, they might contaminate packaged foods. In addition to spreading diseases, cockroaches can trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions in certain individuals. They do this when their shed skins and dry fecal droppings become airborne.
